Vincent Matthys curates BW Pride Awards
The Inaugural Pride Awards set to dazzle
A radiant new chapter unfurls in Botswana’s vibrant narrative, a testament to LGBTQ+ visibility, unbridled joy, and profound recognition. With eager anticipation, there has been an official announcement and of the BW Pride Awards, a pioneering celebration poised to honor the queer excellence, indomitable bravery, boundless creativity, and inspiring leadership flourishing across this remarkable nation.
Queer community is marking calendars for October 3rd, 2025. As the spirit of African Pride Month resonates across the continent, the inaugural BW Pride Awards will find its magnificent home at the prestigious Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino.
The grand ceremony will cast a luminous spotlight upon the remarkable individuals and dedicated organizations who have tirelessly woven the threads of inclusion, amplified representation, and ignited the flame of pride within the community.
Vincent Roman Matthys, the visionary founder of these awards, shared the profound wellspring of his inspiration, stating, “Inspired by the people who paved the way for visibility, joy and honor of being queer in Botswana.”

In his heartfelt launch address, Matthys recalled the very seed of the idea that blossomed into the Pride Awards. “This moment right here has been living in my heart for about three or four years now,” he revealed.
“When Botswana decriminalized same-sex relationships, I wasn’t home, I was in the UK. But I remember thinking about all the people who had fought for that moment. People who never made it to that day. That’s when the seed for the Pride Awards was planted.”
The Awards seek to present those long-overdue “flowers,” centering pride, honor, and the pure essence of queer joy. Beyond the generous embrace of Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino, this momentous event is proudly supported by Collections by BK Proctor, Banana Club, and a vital network of media and advocacy partners, all deeply committed to advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Botswana.
Leading up to the October ceremony, a meticulously curated program of satellite events will unfold across the country. These gatherings are designed to celebrate queer-owned businesses, elevate diverse queer voices, and build a powerful wave of community momentum. The aim extends far beyond merely hosting an award show; it is to ignite a true season of pride that will resonate throughout Botswana.
The integrity and vision of the awards will be overseen by a diverse Nomination Committee, comprising esteemed representatives from key organizations including LEGABIBO, Trans Initiative Botswana, and other cherished community stakeholders.
Among the accolades to be bestowed are the Corporate Inclusion Award, recognizing businesses championing inclusive practices; the Community Leader of the Year, honoring grassroots advocacy; the Creative Force, spotlighting creative excellence; the Fashion Icon; and the Ally of the Year, with more categories yet to be unveiled.
