Thapelo Malani takes center stage in Uganda
From the heart of Botswana, a star is about to rise and shine, not just on home ground but across the African sky. In a stroke of genius, Major Moves Comedy announces that the one and only Thapelo Malani, a beacon of inspiration and laughter, is jetting off to Uganda.
He is not just going with a song in his heart but with a whole show ready to go, performing at the Marabou Laugh Festival in Kampala. Malani, a brave soul who has never let the grass grow under his feet, will take to the stage on the 4th and 5th of September 2025.
Malani, hailing from the small town of Maitengwe, has already made his mark on the comedy scene since his debut. He’s a man who has always been a cut above the rest, proving to be one of the most fearlessly funny comics working today. He doesn’t pull any punches, blending sharp wit and self-deprecating humor with bold takes on the absurdities of everyday life.
This firebrand of comedy is a testament to the fact that you should never judge a book by its cover. Despite being visually impaired, he has truly hit the nail on the head, becoming a heavyweight in the regional circuit with international performances in Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Uganda’s comedy scene is now in for a treat, as the Laughing Marabou will host the biggest comedy festival in the country. This groundbreaking space, founded by a team of visionary comedians, is a stage where laughter is a language spoken by all.
It’s a place where talent, like a rolling stone, gathers no moss and where everyone, from Botswana to Zimbabwe, is a friend. This festival is the talk of the town, and even Emmy Award-winning comedian Joseph Opio has given it a thumbs-up.
As for Malani himself, he is over the moon about his return to Kampala. He’s been there before and knows the ropes, having been warmly received in his previous performances in Uganda and Kenya.
He’s ready to share the stage with a galaxy of talented comedians and is not one to let the cat out of the bag too early, but he is confident that the world is ripe for Botswana comedy. This trip is a shot in the arm for his career, and he’s not one to bite the hand that feeds him. His journey is a team effort, proudly supported by the National Arts Council of Botswana, Major Moves Comedy, and his football club, Batanani Boys Social Club.
Major Moves Comedy, a company that never rests on its laurels, is all about creating platforms for Botswana’s comedic talent. They are playing a pivotal role in positioning Botswana as a rising hub for stand-up comedy, and with talents like Malani, they are truly putting their money where their mouth is. The world is watching as Botswana comedy continues to punch above its weight.
