FROM SUNDAY SCHOOL TO STARDOM:
Thato Tladi’s unique music journey

In Botswana’s vibrant music scene, some artists burst onto the stage, while others, like the talented Thato Tladi, cultivate their craft before stepping into the spotlight. From singing Sunday school hymns to crafting Amapiano hits, Thato’s story exemplifies how passion and persistence can shape a remarkable music career.

Thato’s love for music did not ignite in a sudden flash but rather blossomed gradually. “My love for music began at Sunday school, where I discovered my talent,” he recalls. Early inspirations included gospel stars like Benjamin Dube and Lundi. Later, during junior secondary school, his musical horizons broadened with the discovery of R&B artists like Usher and Trey Songz.

Unlike many musicians who harbor lifelong dreams of stardom, Thato’s journey was more organic. “I actually did music because I was good at it, I was still in school then.” Initially, music was simply an enjoyable pastime. However, during his university years, his appreciation for R&B deepened, particularly for artists like Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.

What makes Thato’s story even more impressive is his self-taught approach. He did not attend music school or take formal lessons. His passion for the guitar was sparked after watching the local group Seeretsi and the Natives. This self-driven learning allowed him to cultivate a truly distinctive sound.

‘Say Yes’ – A Special Collaboration with Samantha Mogwe

One of the highlights of Thato’s career so far is his song “Say Yes,” featuring the renowned artist, Samantha Mogwe. Thato penned the song himself but felt it lacked a crucial element. “After listening to the song, I realized it needed a woman’s voice to balance the story,” he explains.

Initially, finding the right collaborator proved challenging. “We were stuck. We could not think of anyone until we thought of Samantha,” he clarifies. Even then, they were uncertain if she would agree. Fortunately, their existing friendship facilitated the connection. Rather than recording together in a studio, they worked remotely.

“We met and did the song. We removed some of my verses, and three months later she wrote her part in response to what I was saying in the chorus. It became more like a conversation.” The result is a smooth, heartfelt duet that showcases their undeniable chemistry.

Amapiano Hit: ‘Dithuthuntshwane’ Remix

Thato demonstrated his remarkable versatility with the remix of “Dithuthuntshwane,” featuring DJ Latty. The song became a massive hit across Botswana, dominating radio airwaves. It even earned the prestigious “Best Amapiano Song” award at the Yarona FM Music Awards.

“The award showed me that Batswana really loved the song,” Thato expresses gratefully. He also extends his appreciation to others who contributed to the song’s success. “A special shoutout to Dalom Kids for joining the track.” This spirit of teamwork underscores Thato’s collaborative and inclusive approach to music.
