Miss Bright Future contestant champions economic diversification
Lucentia Kgalaeng, a contestant in the Miss Bright Future Botswana pageant, is using her platform to champion a project called “Kabakanyo,” which focuses on economic diversification.
Inspired by Botswana’s reliance on diamond sales and the recent downturn in the industry, Kgalaeng’s project aims to educate the public on the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset and exploring new economic avenues.
The name “Kabakaynyo” means diversification in Setswana, and it’s the core of Kgalaeng’s “Beauty with a Purpose” project. She believes that a strong economy is the foundation for national well-being, influencing everything from healthcare and education to the overall quality of life for Batswana.
By highlighting the need to look beyond traditional sectors, she’s encouraging her fellow citizens to think outside the box and take charge of their economic future.
Kgalaeng’s campaign is built on the belief that education is the key to success. She put this into practice by holding workshops at Diphetogo Primary School, inspired by the Setswana proverb, “Lore lo ojwa lo sale metsi“ (A tree is bent while it is still green).
She encouraged young learners to consider innovative careers in fields like science and other unconventional disciplines that can contribute to the economy in new ways.
To broaden her reach, she also distributed educational pamphlets at public spaces like Rail Park Mall and the Gaborone Bus Rank. These pamphlets highlighted opportunities in areas like agriculture, tourism, and the creative industry, sparking interest and conversation among the public. Despite challenges like limited resources, Kgalaeng found the experience to be incredibly fulfilling and a boost to her own self-confidence.
Kgalaeng’s project shows how a beauty pageant platform can be used for meaningful social and economic advocacy. By focusing on education and mindset shifts, she’s not only competing but also contributing to a conversation about the future of her nation.
