Gaborone Pride cancelled due to lack of funds
Gaborone Pride takes a reluctant pause due to funding challenges

The Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTIQ+) community in Gaborone is reeling from the disappointing news that Gaborone Pride celebrations for 2025 have been canceled due to insufficient funds. This means there will be no physical observance of Pride this year, including the cherished annual Pride march and the main celebratory event.

In a statement, Gaborone Pride explained, “As a grassroots movement that relies on partnerships, sponsorships and goodwill to create and empowering spaces, the lack of funds has impacted our ability to mobilize resources required to host an event of the scale and safety that our community deserves.”

While this news is profoundly disappointing, organizers and supporters remain incredibly grateful for the unwavering support shown by the gay community, allies, and all who have worked proudly and boldly with Gaborone Pride over the years. “Your love, presence and the voice have made Gaborone Pride more than just an event; they have made it a movement of resilience, joy and liberation and togetherness,” the statement read.

Despite the cancellation of physical gatherings, the spirit of Gaborone Pride remains unshaken. “Though we may not gather physically this year, our spirit remains unshaken. We continue to stand in unbreakable solidarity with each and every member of the gay community across the entire country,” the organization affirmed.

This is not a goodbye, but rather a pause and a promise to return stronger. Gaborone Pride assured its community that in the coming months, they will continue to explore meaningful ways to unite, celebrate, and advocate, even if not in person.
