FME DJs turn 10 years in style
A DECADE OF HARMONY: FME DJs celebrates 10 years in style
In an industry where musical groups often go their separate ways, the FME DJs have stood the test of time. Against a backdrop of local acts like Ice Cold Mob, Culture Spears, and Khoisan facing breakups, this Amapiano trio, comprised of Piet the DJ, Dee Bond, and DJ Jozi Straight, is celebrating a remarkable 10-year anniversary.
Their secret is a potent mix of commitment, communication, and hard work, which has made them a true diamond in the rough in Botswana’s music scene. Drawing inspiration from resilient artists like Vee Mampeezy, the FME DJs, whose name stands for Fresh Mafia Entertainment, have become household names with a massive following.
Their online presence alone is a testament to their success, boasting over 100,000 followers on Facebook. But their reach extends beyond just music. The trio also hosts “The Car Show,” a popular online podcast where they hilariously prank their creative friends, showcasing their comedic talents and clever marketing.

The future looks bright for the FME DJs. Their unwavering consistency and dedication serve as an inspiration to aspiring artists across Botswana. As they continue to sail smoothly through the music industry, their story is a powerful reminder that with a strong foundation and a unified vision, a group can achieve lasting success and make a meaningful impact.

The foundation, they say, is a token of appreciation for their fans’ unwavering love and support. This isn’t their first act of kindness; they’ve previously donated to the Kana Kgang initiative, which provides toiletries to those in need, and have distributed large quantities of food parcels to help numerous families.

To mark their decade-long journey, the FME DJs recently returned to their roots in the Old Naledi neighborhood of Gaborone. Through their FME Foundation, they celebrated by giving back to the community that has supported them from the beginning. They handed out essential items like food, blankets, and cleaning detergents, continuing a long-standing tradition of philanthropy.

Balete men go for Bogwera initiation school

THE CALL OF THE WILD: Balete men leave for Bogwera
Just in the heart of the Ramotswa region, a sacred tradition echoes through the villages of Ramotswa, Taung, Mogobane, and Otse. Led by the esteemed Kgosi Mosadi Seboko, the Balete tribe upholds the age-old practice of Bogwera, a month-long male initiation that transforms boys into responsible men.
Every August, a powerful silence descends upon the Balete territory. This year, over 200 men answered the call of Bogwera, leaving their homes and families to embark on a journey into the wild. As Deputy Paramount Chief Kgosi Tsimane Mokgosi explained, this is more than just a cultural ceremony; it is a rigorous training ground for adulthood. “Bogwera teaches men to stay responsible and ‘man enough’ to know what’s right or wrong,” he stated.
The respect for this tradition is absolute. Once the initiates have departed, the community observes a period of ultimate reverence. Noise is kept to a minimum, parties and marriages are postponed, and even public music is forbidden. This is a time of quiet reflection, where the community collectively supports the men on their journey. Those who fail to comply face harsh penalties, a testament to the high regard in which this cultural practice is held.

Bogwera is a tradition with deep historical roots, dating back to before the 16th and 17th centuries. It served as a vital part of the community’s spiritual and social life, preparing young men between the ages of 16 and 23 for their future roles. Before the initiation, these young men would gather to learn traditional songs, herd cattle, and perform other tasks, all under the guidance of their chief.
Kgosi Mokgosi emphasized the modern-day importance of Bogwera, especially in a world grappling with social ills often linked to men, such as gender-based violence, crime, and substance abuse. By teaching responsibility and instilling a strong moral compass, Bogwera aims to create a new generation of men who are equipped to be pillars of their communities and loving family men. As the initiates undergo their transformation, the Balete community holds its breath, awaiting their return as men ready to take on the world.

John Moeng unleashes live Mannequin skills
JOHN MOENG: The story of a live mannequin
John Moeng is not an average 21-year-old. Hailing from a small village in Oodi, he has managed to blend two seemingly disparate worlds: water engineering and high fashion. A graduate in Water Engineering, John has also forged a career as a male model, and not just any model, he’s a live mannequin, a role that requires him to stand perfectly still for hours on end, a feat of discipline and endurance that has turned heads everywhere from private brand events to Forbes Under 30 summits.
John’s journey has been anything but smooth. As a child, he was the tallest kid in his village, a fact that made him a target for bullies. “I was laughed at and mocked for my height,” he says. “But I had dreams.” He credits those who made fun of him for lighting a fire within him.

“I’m where I am today because of them. They were a blessing in disguise.” He also credits his mother, a single parent who raised five children, for instilling in him a strong sense of responsibility and faith. “She introduced me to God and taught me accountability,” he says. “She is a God-sent.”
John’s foray into the fashion world was a case of serendipity. He was always interested in unique clothing, but it wasn’t until a mentor, David Ini Grace, saw his potential that he began to take it seriously. It was Grace who helped him understand the “interlocking connection between fashion and performance,” a connection that would eventually lead him to his unique niche.
The journey to becoming a live mannequin began with a five-minute crash course. At a Forbes Under 30 summit, Mboko Basiame, the founder of the Glotto brand, saw something in John and offered him the chance to be a live mannequin.
Despite his initial reluctance, John decided to bite the bullet. It was a baptism by fire. “I was not prepared, I wasn’t comfortable with that opportunity at the first meeting when I heard it,” John recalls. “But Mboko saw through me.” John’s debut was a memorable one.
He stood still for five and a half hours, even when presidents from Botswana and Zimbabwe prodded him to see if he was real. “They called my name, I didn’t answer because I was commanded not to speak nor move,” he remembers with a laugh.
Balancing a demanding academic career with a burgeoning modeling career was no small task, but John learned to put his nose to the grindstone. “I developed a time schedule and studied ahead so I could attend events and still pass my exams,” he explains.
He advises other young people to connect their passions with their studies and to seek out a mentor. “Use your university as a gateway to your dreams,” he says. John’s journey proves that with hard work, a little bit of faith, and a whole lot of gumption, you can go from being the tall kid in the village to a towering figure on the world stage.

Spotlight on Création Botswana: Designer’s Perspective
Local Threads magazine features Gaekgone Lesego, a seasoned fashion designer, born and raised in Maun, Botswana, the gateway to the Okavango Delta.
Lesego is among the 28 designers participating in the Création Botswana program. She is part of the second cohort of seasoned and established designers.
Your Design Journey:
Briefly describe your brand’s aesthetic and what inspires your designs.
Authenticity, being true to who I am as a person, the role my environment plays to who I am is African heritage. I noticed there was a gap of quality ready-to-wear (RTW) leteisi/African print casual wear, and as a creative who is proud of my origin and identity, I wanted to help other women and creatives to embrace their identity through fashion.
What motivated you to pursue fashion design in Botswana? I grew up in an environment where I thought RTW fashionable clothes are from a store, and these clothes are not from our hands. Yet Clothing & Textile is the second industry after food production, which means it can create more jobs, unlike my experience when growing up, I’ll like the upcoming generation to have exposure to fashionable RTW mass production and see that it can come from their hands. It is our ultimate goal to build this brand to create jobs and empower women and artisans in the North-West region.
The Création Botswana Experience:
What specific aspects of the Création Botswana program have been most impactful for you as a designer?
For me every workshop has been impactful and relevant, if there is one thing that has been repeated by the experts throughout is; knowing and defining your brand DNA, these compelled me to think beyond just the use of fabrics and look deep in my story, why I started. Everything workshop topic really flowed well, we have delved deep into storytelling which is something I have held back from, I feel equipped and ready to share my story and build this brand.
How has the program helped you overcome challenges or seize new opportunities within the local fashion industry?
I started Prestige with excitement, used my personal savings produced ready-made clothing and home textile products, we have around 25 textile products we manufacture. But along the way I came to a point where I felt I needed direction, I knew the ultimate goal but at that juncture I was not sure how to move ahead, but Creation Botswana has been an answered prayer, we have International experts with lots of experience and one on one mentorship sessions. As a result, I have a clear direction on how to build this brand. I look forward to the impact this brand and that of my fellow Creative Botswana participants will have in the fashion in the industry in Botswana.
Looking Ahead:
What are your aspirations for your brand’s future, and how do you see Création Botswana contributing to those goals?
I look forward to more collaborations and partnership with stores and local companies to mainly distribute our products both locally and internationally. I also look forward to having our own prints on fabrics to better express our aesthetics and creativity.
What message would you share with other aspiring designers in Botswana about the importance of programs like this.
Do not hesitate to apply for programs such as Creation Botswana, we can never stop learning. And I will end By sharing a quote by Zara Odi, one of the experts on branding from Nigeria, “It’s not about creating a cool product, it’s about creating a DNA first, you don’t want to come to the world mediocre”.
