Cresta Grande serves up bush dinner experience as Botswana pushes for domestic tourism revival

Domestic tourism in Botswana is having its moment in the sun. With dwindling diamond sales tightening the country’s economic belt, the tourism and hospitality industry is stepping up to the plate. Now more than ever, diversification is not just a buzzword, it’s a necessity. And leading the charge is Cresta Hotels, through its bold new initiative at Cresta Grande Jwaneng: the Bush Dinner Experience.
More than just a meal, it’s a celebration of Botswana’s natural charm, culinary talent, and the power of immersive experiences.
On Tuesday, lifestyle journalists, bloggers, and Cresta staff were given a front-row seat to the very first instalments of this concept, an evening designed to whet appetites and stir the soul. The journey began with an afternoon road trip to Jwaneng, affectionately known as Mecca to the locals.

“The key to any memorable experience is attention to detail,” once said the late chef Anthony Bourdain, and this night proved him right.
After brief introductions, the culinary magic began. First up, a delightful amuse-bouche set the mood, followed by a duo of creamed mushroom and butternut soups served with crispy crostini, warming and perfectly seasoned, like a hug in a bowl.
Guests then chose between two appetizers: a hors d’oeuvre platter featuring smoked salmon rosettes and Melrose prawn cocktail, or a crisp garden greens salad with feta and olives. As one guest remarked, “Every bite was a match made in heaven.”
The main course brought the house down: marinated Kalahari lamb chops and chicken lollipops atop mustard mash and vegetable medley, alongside pan-fried hake fillets glazed in lemon butter reduction. To round it off was a dreamy Neapolitan pasta with Parmesan shavings and tender turned potatoes.
As Julia Child once said, “People who love to eat are always the best people.” And Tuesday night was full of the best people, laughing, snapping sunset selfies, and bonding over exquisite food beneath the open Botswana sky.
