Lincoln tells his story of art and creativity
THE PALETTE OF LIFE: An interview with Fine Artist Lincoln Langwane
Lincoln Langwane’s journey into the world of art began not with a formal lesson, but with a natural inclination that surfaced in his earliest memories. He recalls being captivated by drawings as a child, a fascination that was nurtured by watching his father, a painter himself, at work. This childhood passion evolved into a serious practice during his final year of tertiary education, laying the foundation for his career as a fine artist.
For Langwane, portraits are his preferred medium. He finds them to be more than just a physical representation; they are a means to capture a person’s identity, personality, and emotional state.
His choice of a muse is often intuitive, driven by his own feelings or a desire to communicate a specific message. Sometimes, it’s simply the raw beauty and authenticity of the human form that draws him in.
Langwane considers himself an experimental artist, always pushing the boundaries and trying new styles. He recognizes that art, while often seen as subjective, must also resonate with diverse audiences.
This understanding helps him maintain a balance between his creative vision and the client’s desires, especially when working on commissions. He believes that creativity is a continuous cycle, fueling problem-solving, emotional well-being, and personal growth. It enhances life skills, from quick thinking to out-of-the-box perspectives.
Among his commissioned works, one stands out: his first mural. It came at a critical time when he was recovering from a fractured hand and doubted his ability to paint again.
The trust of a client with “crazy faith” not only helped him rediscover his talent but also left a lasting impression. He also has a single, most valuable art piece that holds a deep, personal significance and is difficult to part with.
Langwane’s inspiration is drawn from a rich tapestry of sources: people, music, emotions, and life experiences. He believes there’s an undeniable connection between these elements that touches the soul, a feeling he seeks to convey through his art.
