Jeff Matheatau passes away, music industry conveys condolensces
Music industry mourns the loss of Rhumba pioneer Jeff Matheatau
The vibrant music and entertainment scene in Botswana is cloaked in sorrow as it mourns the passing of a true pioneer, Jeff Matheatau. More than just a gifted artist, Matheatau was a visionary producer and entertainer who dedicated his life to revitalizing the local music industry, sharing heartfelt moments, and expressing boundless creativity through song and dance.
When Jeff Matheatau first burst onto the music scene, music was far more than mere entertainment; it was a lifeline. His songs were crafted to inspire and offer solace during trying times, weaving themselves into the fabric of countless households and creating enduring memories.
His music was, in essence, a moving therapy. Its melodies would drift from a distance, carried on the air from a neighbor’s home where well-loved cassettes played. His influence transcended boundaries, and even today, many of Jeff Matheatau’s timeless tracks resonate deeply with listeners.
Jeff Matheatau stood shoulder to shoulder with other musical giants of his time, such as Franco Lesokwane. Together, they spearheaded and championed the Rhumba and Kwasa Kwasa movement. Their performances were electrifying; their dance moves out of this world. Both the young and the old were captivated by their music, and even now, in their absence, many fondly recall dancing to their infectious tunes in their youth.
Though television was not as prevalent then, Jeff Matheatau’s music found its way into the hearts of many through Radio Botswana (RB1), a station dedicated to promoting Setswana music. He also graced the screens of BTV’s popular show, Mokaragana, a platform that significantly boosted his career, particularly during the era of hosts like Miso Mmereki.

Jeff Matheatau’s passing leaves a profound void in the music industry. As these musical pioneers become fallen heroes, contemporary artists find themselves navigating a new landscape. Tumza Modise, an emerging Rhumba artist, extended his heartfelt condolences, acknowledging that Jeff Matheatau provided a crucial platform for many artists to flourish.
Vee Mampeezy reflected on Matheatau’s significant role in his own music journey, describing him as a true master and a humble colleague who selflessly supported others. Fellow musician Chris Manto7 remembered Jeff Matheatau not just as a Rhumba legend, but as a guiding light and a wellspring of inspiration for countless individuals in the music community.
“Our personal relationship held deep meaning for me, as you introduced me to the world of live recording, which forever changed my life as a dancer and backing vocalist,” shared Chris Manto7. “Your passion, talent and generosity will be profoundly missed. You have left an indelible mark on all of us who had the privilege to know you and work with you.”
